The Conservative Party suffered their worst defeat in modern British history at the 2024 general election. Led by then Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the party retained just 121 seats, polling 23.7% of the vote. In comparison, the last time Labour took power from opposition in 1997, the Conservatives retained 165 seats with 30.6% of the vote, which at the time was considered historically poor.
